Composting to Go Green
How does this sound for a different kind of breakfast routine…whip up some scrambled eggs, have some coffee, read your newspaper and make some compost at the same time. What? Make compost? That doesn’t sound very appealing does it?
Wait a minute, let’s back up. What, after all, is compost? It is the end product of the natural decomposition of organic matter. No, it doesn’t have to be smelly or messy, in fact, if done correctly it not only smells sweet, it is truly a way to “go green” when we all need to do whatever we can in this direction.
Back to the breakfast scenario. Did you know that egg shells, coffee grounds, coffee filters and newspapers are great compost materials? And you can compost whether you live in an apartment, a house, or a farm.
First, let’s discuss the benefits of composting. A well made compost will make your soil rich in nutrients for your garden (even if it’s only an apartment garden), make your grass greener, your house plants healthier, or, if you are a farmer, make your crops more abundant and healthier.
Secondly, it is definitely an easy way to “go green”. It is an efficient and economical way to help your environment by utilizing what is usually thought of as “waste” or “trash”.
Now before you get too excited and just throw your morning newspaper in with your eggs shells and coffee grounds and hope for compost, let’s take a minute and learn some of the basics.
To start out you need to decide on a space for composting. If you plan on doing a lot of composting you may want to choose a place outside as opposed to inside your home. Once that is determined you can either just compost in the open with no container or choose one with a tight fitting lid. To utilize your kitchen scraps ( and if you are an “apartment farmer”) you will need to pick out a one gallon, stainless steel, lidded container. You can get these with replaceable carbon filters (which eliminate any odors) and biodegradable compost bags. These bags fit in the container and when they’re full you simply take the bag and put it in your larger container outside. (Note: never put meat or dairy in your “scrap container”. The kitchen scraps you do put in, make sure they are relatively small pieces as they will break down more rapidly that way.)
Besides the bin, other tools you will need are: a water hose, a wheel barrow and small garden tools such as a spade.
Another factor to consider before you start composting is the climate in which you live. Of course, the colder the region, the longer the composting will take. Generally, people will start composting in the fall because of the temperature and also to utilize tree leaves.
Now, there is a specific ratio of ingredients to ensure your compost comes out right, which is beyond the scope of this article. But don’t despair! You can immediately start composting and make your wife happy at the same time!?! Go out and mow the lawn and leave the clippings on the grass. Remember, go green!!
