- Look for a REALTOR®: It’s important to know that all licensed real estate agents are not REALTORS®. A REALTOR® is a member of the National Association of REALTORS®. This association works with a motive of promoting a higher standard of ethics within the industry. The advantage of hiring such a realtor is that these members have more readily available access to current listing information, than a non-member licensee. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a REALTOR® especially if you are hiring one for residential property.
- Interview the agents: You should make sure to ask your prospective realtor about how long he or she has been in the area, or how long he or she has been an agent?
- Ask about their real estate designations: Ask your realtor if they have any designations like SRES. If the real estate agent has earned the Seniors Real Estate Specialists® (SRES) designation, it implies that he or she has completed an additional course concerning the needs of the home buyers and sellers. But still, designations are not the most important aspect of judging the credibility of a realtor. It is just an added advantage if your realtor has one.
- Recognize your comfort zone: It is very important that you feel comfortable with your real estate agent. It is equally important that you believe he or she is listening to your needs. You might want to fire an agent who is not doing his or her job according to your needs, but careless agent hopping can also be can be harmful to your goal of finding the perfect property at the best price.
- Show your loyalty: It’s important that you maintain your side of loyalty when working with a real estate agent. You should direct any questions on properties that you come across to your agent, and not take it upon yourself to call the selling agent. Remember that working with the selling agent yourself will not get you a lower price on the property. Rather you may just loose a good relation with the realtor (if he comes to know) and he or she may end up without a payday.
